Dr Tarun Sahni is an alumnus of Armed Forces Medical College following which he served the Indian Navy for over a decade and took voluntary release to pursue his aspirations. He then worked in the UK and UAE prior to coming back to India to establish India’s first private hyperbaric treatment center at the Apollo Hospital Delhi -which he currently heads.
While in the Navy he qualified in the MD in Internal Medicine and Diploma in Marine Medicine of Bombay University and held prestigious positions both as a doctor and as a policy maker. He worked for many years at the Institute of Naval Medicine Mumbai and later as director medical research & training and adviser to the Chief of Naval Staff on Hyperbaric and Diving Medicine at Naval Headquarters.
While in the navy he was instrumental in planning and implementing one of the world’s highest Altitude dives in the Himalayas at Lake Pangong at an altitude of 14200 feet in 1988. The detail was selected to be published in a leading international medical journal and is documented in the Limca Book of Records. During the formation of the Naval Commandos he was part of the initial team.
After leaving the Navy he went to the UK and subsequently to Abu Dhabi. As an advisor to Oil industry in the Gulf he designed and implemented an offshore medical evacuation plan and training of offshore medical and non-medical staff, which continues to be practiced.
On return to India in 1996 he took the role of an entrepreneur with a focus on two verticals. The first objective was to establish a successful clinical practice in India’s leading hospital and the second to establish and operate a company offering services in the area of healthcare strategy consulting.
Dr Tarun Sahni completed an Ambulatory Care Design and Management Course at Harvard in 2000 and set up a healthcare strategy company “Advent Healthcare Pvt Ltd” which has carried out many customized and challenging projects for clients from overseas and within the country both in public and private.
He is experienced in working with organizations to address their challenges, both on strategic and operational lines, across public and private sectors. He possesses proven leadership qualities of managing delivery of complex assignment with large teams across multiple locations. He has exceptional communication and conflict resolution capabilities especially in adverse environments. His ability to understand the real challenges of healthcare service providers helps in design of patient-centric approaches while protecting interests of stakeholders.
Dr Sahni is a recognized ‘teacher’ for the diploma in Marine Medicine of Bombay University and the Diplomate National Board for Internal Medicine and has many national and International publications to his credit. He is recognized by both IMCA and ONGC as an expert in Diving Medicine (Level IIb). He provides medical support to compressed air workers and has provided service to Delhi Metro in 2002, 2009,2013 and currently in 2014.
He is the co founder and current president of both the ‘Hyperbaric society of India’ and the ‘Asian Hyperbaric & Diving Medicine Association’. For this contribution to education and research in the field of Diving & Hyperbaric Medicine, he has been conferred the title of ‘Professor’ by the Apollo Hospital & Educational Research Foundation. He also has a mention in Limca book of records in 2000.
He has a pleasant personality, an ability to develop good interpersonal relationships and reliable as a team player. He is a keen sportsperson having played squash at a national level and is a certified Level II squash coach. He continues to work in sports sciences and also operates a squash training academy.
Dr Tarun Sahni is now exploring opportunities where one can implement the knowledge and experience to bring in innovativeness in the healthcare delivery system.
